The Sift Minecraft: Everything Revealed About the New Dimension

Fourteen years. That is how long we have been staring at the exact same three dimensions. For a long time, the only real thrill we had left was the absolute tilt of falling into Nether lava and watching a full set of enchanted Netherite gear burn. But The Sift Minecraft update is finally breaking the drought.

Announced at Minecraft Live on September 26, 2026, Mojang is officially dropping a fourth dimension. No, it is not just another empty void or fiery wasteland. It is loud, hyper-colorful, and completely stuffed with souls.

Below is what is confirmed, what is theory, and what you should do with your survival world while we wait.

What Is the Sift in Minecraft?

The Sift is Minecraft’s fourth official dimension. It is not a biome pack and it is not a reskin. Mojang describes it as “beautiful, vibrant, and teeming with souls.”

Dungeons II Game Director Måns Olson gave the clearest explanation. The team wanted a place that feels like a different Overworld, somewhere you could actually imagine living.

The Nether and The End already cover hostile and bleak, so The Sift goes lush, strange, and still dangerous.

Inside Dungeons II development, the dimension went by the name Wellspring. The final name stuck, and players immediately read it as a soul filter or afterlife layover, where souls get sorted before heading to the Nether, getting recycled, or staying put.

That is fan theory, not confirmed lore. Still, the sculk, the ichor, and the constant “souls” language all feed it.

How the Sift Looks in Vanilla Minecraft

The only vanilla footage so far is a short clip from Minecraft Live. It shows pink and salmon sculk grass in short and tall variants, green sculk blocks with a turquoise tint, and thick white trees with gray trunks, pale leaves, and hanging foliage.

Picture the Pale Garden with the saturation cranked up and soul energy sprinkled on top.

The Dungeons II version leans harder into red and orange stone, green plants, sculk patches, and floating souls. Expect the final vanilla dimension to land somewhere between the two moods.

Ichor and the Soul Liquid Problem

Ichor is the thick, multicolored liquid that fills pools across the Dungeons II version. Developers reportedly called it “ouch water” for most of production, and the name fits.

It sets you on soul fire and drains your souls. Native Sift mobs ignore it completely, and Blubs actually bathe in it.

If you have ever waded into lava with a full Netherite kit, you already know how much a bad liquid can ruin a session. Treat ichor with the same respect until Mojang tells us how it works in survival.

Minecraft’s The Sift Arrival Date and Release Window

Two dates matter right now.

Minecraft Dungeons II arrives on September 29, 2026. This is the first playable version of The Sift. It launches on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, and it is included with Game Pass.

Java and Bedrock get The Sift in 2027. That is all Mojang has said. There is no month, no drop name, and no snapshot window. The studio says more details will come at future Minecraft Live events.

One more detail matters for planning. The next game drop, Ice Caves with its Frozen Zombie variant, comes first and is already heading into testing. The Sift follows after that. Nothing Sift-related has appeared in a snapshot yet.

How to Get the Sift in Minecraft

The answer depends on which game you are playing.

Reaching the Sift in Minecraft Dungeons II

Dungeons II gives you two routes. The first is random rifts that tear open across the interconnected Overworld.

You walk into one and you are there. The second is the reinforced Deep Dark portal inside Ancient Cities, which you activate with a Note Block Machine.

Singers, the long-necked, antlered gray creatures, are tied to waking that portal with song. The Grand Illusioner’s staff can also force extra rifts open.

How to Get the Sift in Vanilla Java and Bedrock

Nobody knows yet. Mojang has not shown a portal design, an activation item, or a recipe. The Ancient City frame is the obvious guess because Dungeons II uses it, but that is a guess. Some players also expect a music puzzle or random rifts.

Ignore any video claiming the vanilla portal method is already solved. It is not in the game, and no snapshot has it.

Playing a Sift-Like World Right Now in Java

If you cannot wait, a fan mod called “Mielon’s The Sift” exists on CurseForge. It is unofficial, but it is the only way to walk a Sift-style world in Java survival today.

It uses the Ancient City portal plus a specific Note Block sequence (1-3-7-6-5-2-4-8) after you wake the blocks with a goat horn and a Singer.

The mod adds 10 biomes, siftslate stone, ichor lakes that heal you in the mod version, and extra creatures.

Do not treat any of that as a preview of the official mechanics. The mod is one creator’s take.

Sift Biomes and Blocks We Know So Far

Three named areas have surfaced in Dungeons II.

• Singer’s Meadow (The Meadows): the lush green forest where most players land first, with willow-style trees.
• The Carapace: a bone-heavy, desert-style biome.
• Lullaby Hills: barely shown so far.

Mojang confirmed the Sift has other areas it is keeping secret for Dungeons II players to find.

Is Siftslate Good for Building Bases?

The Live footage shows pink healthy sculk, green sculk blocks, and white tree logs. The wiki names for those blocks are community labels based on the clip, so keep that in mind.

Siftslate is the stone name used by the fan mod and community discussion, not a confirmed vanilla block.

What we can say is that the palette is a builder’s dream on paper. Pale trunks and pink grass give you a soft base that would look sharp against dark deepslate or blackstone.

Wait for a real snapshot before you plan a build around any block name.

Every Known Sift Mob

Here is the honest split. Only one mob is confirmed for vanilla Minecraft, the Blub. Everything else below comes from the Dungeons II roster, which is our best preview of what vanilla might borrow later.

Blub: the Only Confirmed Vanilla Mob

The Blub is small, passive, and rabbit-like. It squeaks. It hops around the pink sculk grass in the Live clip, and it is the only creature officially named for vanilla. Even Hallmark Christmas ornaments leaked it months before the reveal.

Friendly and Passive Sift Creatures

• Licker: a sniffer cousin with a huge tongue that just licks things.
• Singer: rare, gray, long-necked, and antlered. Tied to the portal, Echo Golems, and song. A hidden achievement called “Friend of the Sift” rewards you for receiving the Singer’s gift of song.
• Echo Golem: a helpful construct powered by soul blocks the Singers make.
• Seedling and the unofficially named Sift Sheep.

Hostile Sift Mobs and Bosses

The hostile list is long, and it is where the real danger sits.

• Baby Sifter: a small melee biter.
• Bearded Sifter: shakes its head and fires tracking projectiles from its chin.
• Tall Sifter: shoots explosive goo from its mouth.
• Nester: lunges after a cooldown.
• Sprout: a flying, tentacled ranged attacker.
• Trill: grouped flyers.
• Sculk Slasher: long claws, a dash attack, and afterimages.
• Others: Crested Sentinel, Groobler Sentinel, Sculk Mage, and Antenna Sifter (some names are still unofficial).

Bosses and mini-bosses include the Sculk Monstrosity, which uses a shoulder charge, a soul burst, and summons Sculk Cubes.

The Monarch can split or conjure its own soul as a clone. The Harmonizer is also confirmed, along with the Sculk Dancer mini-boss that spins and explodes if you get too close.

Illagers have also invaded the dimension in the Dungeons II story to steal souls and resources, so you fight regular and soul-corrupted Illager types in there too.

Are the New Sift Mobs Actually Friendly?

Some are. The Blub, Licker, and Singer look harmless, and the Echo Golem is a straight-up helper. But the Sifters, Sprouts, and the Sculk Slasher are not here to make friends.

Vanilla may or may not keep that hostile roster. Mojang has not said, and that is the biggest unknown for survival players.

Sift Lore and Community Theories

Dungeons II gives fans plenty to chew on, and the community is already stitching threads together. These are theories unless Mojang says otherwise.

• Ancient Cities and the Deep Dark portal were built when the Sift was still reachable. The Singers’ music opened it.
• The sniffer theory: sniffers and the Licker look like relatives from the same ancient period. Some players think sniffers are Sift species stranded in the Overworld when the portal closed.
• Sick sculk: the sculk in our Overworld could be an infected version of the healthy pink and green sculk in the Sift.
• Leaking souls: the souls drifting through the Overworld in Dungeons II leak out because the rifts are opening.

There is also a Dungeons II-related novel called The Rift that talks about Singers communicating through song.

What the Developers Said

Jeb said in August 2026 that every dimension needs a functional reason to exist. That is why the team built it in Dungeons II first, to find the gameplay hook before dropping it into the sandbox.

Game Director Agnes Larsson called The Sift “one of the important steps on the journey to making Minecraft more adventurous,” and added that it is not the end of it.

The long-term focus is “aspirational adventures.” Jens Bergenström has also been clear for years that a new dimension has to earn its place with gameplay, not just pretty screenshots.

How to Prepare Your Survival World for the Sift in 2027

We do not have a portal recipe, so nobody can prep for the exact mechanic. What we can do is prepare for the likely ingredients.

Treat everything in this section as informed guesswork based on the Dungeons II version, not confirmed vanilla features.

Stock Up Around Your Ancient City

If the vanilla portal follows Dungeons II, it will sit in an Ancient City. That means the Warden. Every veteran knows the feeling of creeping through the dark with a heartbeat pounding, one bad step away from losing the run. Get your Ancient City trip figured out now.

Build a safe path, pack wool, and stash spare Netherite gear in a chest you will not touch. Music-based activation also hints at a Note Block Machine, so a few dozen note blocks are cheap insurance.

Pack for Soul Damage and Liquids

Ichor sets you on soul fire and drains souls. Fire resistance potions and a stack of water buckets are the obvious starting points. Bring a shield too, because Sifters fire tracking projectiles.

Clear Chest Space for New Loot

Every new dimension brings new blocks and drops. Free up two or three chests now, and keep some Ice Caves space open as well, since that drop arrives first.

Leave Your Main Base Alone Until Snapshots Land

We do not know the coordinate scale, whether beds work, or how long you can survive there. Do not rebuild your base around guesses. Keep your world backed up and watch the first snapshot.

What We Still Do Not Know

The list of unknowns is long, and it matters for survival players.

• The portal recipe or activation method
• Whether beds work
• Whether the Sift runs at 1:1 with the Overworld or uses Nether-style compression
• Any unique ores or crafting materials
• How dangerous the environment is in survival
• Whether you can live there long-term or just visit
• Which exact 2027 drop it ships in

Community Reaction: Too Cute or About Time?

The timeline is split. Half the player base is hyped for any new dimension after 14 years. The other half already calls it too pastel next to the Nether’s hellscape and The End’s emptiness. 

Some players wanted another dark, mysterious place. Mojang chose the opposite direction on purpose.

Our take: the colors are the point. We already have two hostile dimensions, and a place that looks safe but bites is a fresh kind of tension.

The Sift Minecraft dimension is the biggest structural change to the game in over a decade, and right now we only have a Blub, a pink teaser clip, and a lot of Dungeons II footage.
