Disclaimer: This summary was created using Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Silent Hill Townfall just landed, and after four years of near-total silence, the wait is finally over. This isn’t another trip back to that fog-choked Maine resort town.

Townfall drops you on a freezing Scottish island in 1996, hands you a busted little CRT television instead of a flashlight, and lets a fishing village that looks empty prove you wrong.

Here’s the quick rundown before we get into the details.

How a 2022 Teaser Turned into a 2026 Release

Townfall first appeared in Konami’s October 2022 Silent Hill Transmission, the same showcase that introduced the Silent Hill 2 remake and Silent Hill f.

Back then, the studio attached was No Code, the Glasgow team known for Stories Untold and Observation, with Annapurna Interactive co-publishing. Then things went quiet for a long stretch.

Fans got nervous when a chunk of Annapurna’s staff departed in 2024, though Annapurna publicly confirmed the project was still alive.

In July 2025, No Code rebranded as Screen Burn Interactive, a name the studio said referenced the ghost image left behind on an old CRT screen, fitting, given the whole aesthetic of the game.

A team of roughly 30 people spent four years building this. Its working title in industry databases was reportedly Cannula, which makes a lot more sense once you see the IV line taped to the protagonist’s arm.

The full reveal came at Sony’s State of Play on February 12, 2026, with the release date locked in during the June 2, 2026 State of Play.

Four years from teaser to launch, for a 30-person team making a licensed Silent Hill title in Unreal Engine 5, reads less like a stalled project and more like a studio that actually took its time with the town.

Jon McKellan directs and writes, Graeme McKellan handles design, and Motoi Okamoto, the same producer steering the wider Silent Hill revival, oversees things on the Konami side. The score isn’t Akira Yamaoka this time.

Canadian artist Pilotpriest (Anthony Scott Burns) composed a reactive soundtrack that shifts with what’s happening on screen, and the first track released was titled “Home.”

Silent Hill Townfall Release Date, Platforms, and Price

The official launch is Thursday, September 24, 2026. Deluxe buyers got in 48 hours early, on September 22. Depending on region and storefront, some players saw the game unlock slightly earlier than midnight local time.

Platforms are limited to PlayStation 5 and Windows PC, available through Steam and Epic. Physical copies exist for PS5.

There’s no Xbox Series version at launch, the same pattern the Silent Hill 2 remake followed. PS5 Pro gets enhanced support, and DualSense features are built in throughout: adaptive triggers, haptics, 3D audio, and optional motion controls for tuning the game’s signature device.

Pricing:

  • Standard Edition: $49.99
  • Digital Deluxe Edition: $59.99

Deluxe includes the early access window, an alternate outfit for the protagonist, an interactive artbook and soundtrack app, and extra device skins.

Deluxe is digital-only. At $50, this lands cheaper than most current-generation horror releases, which is a big part of why people are already arguing about whether it’s worth it.

PC Specs

PC players need Windows 11 and about 75 GB of storage. This isn’t a light install.

  • Minimum: Ryzen 5 3600 or i7-8700K, 16 GB RAM, RTX 2060 Super or RX 6600; 1080p Low at 30fps
  • Recommended: Ryzen 7 5700X or i7-9700K, 32 GB RAM, RTX 3080 or RX 7800 XT; 4K High with DLSS/FSR/TSR Balanced at 30fps

Steam Deck runs it, technically. Early reports describe it as barely playable, with drops when you move quickly and a recommendation to keep things slow and steady. It’s not a game you want to buy specifically for handheld play right now.

Performance on Console

Neither PS5 nor PS5 Pro holds a locked 60fps in demanding scenes; the frame rate can dip to around 42fps even on Pro hardware.

Base PS5 offers a Quality mode running near 1440p internally (reconstructed to 4K via TSR) at 30fps, and a Performance mode targeting 60fps at roughly 1080p with the same reconstruction.

PS5 Pro swaps in PSSR instead of TSR, which noticeably improves textures, shadows, reflections, and global illumination, though Performance mode does scale back some post-processing, including the fog that the series is known for.

Some PC players have also reported stutter, tied to what looks like broader optimization issues rather than one specific platform.

Story, Characters, and Gameplay of Silent Hill: Townfall

It’s winter, 1996. American Simon Ordell (Jovan Adepo) keeps regaining consciousness in the water near the docks of St. Amelia, a fictional Scottish island town modeled on the real East Neuk of Fife fishing village of St Monans.

story, character and gameplay of silent hill townfall

He’s got an IV cannula still taped to his hand, a hospital wristband, and almost no memory of why he’s there. A voice coming through a pocket television keeps telling him to come back and put things right.

The town looks abandoned. Old protest signs are still standing in the square. Phone boxes, pebble-dash houses, period-correct cars, fog thick enough to feel like actual weather rather than an effect layered on top. Then the fog starts moving on its own.

Konami has been clear that this is a self-contained story; you don’t need any history with Silent Hill 1 through 4, the remake, or f to follow it.

Okamoto’s pitch for this era of the franchise is that Silent Hill isn’t one cursed American town anymore; it’s closer to a phenomenon that can settle over any place carrying enough guilt.

Townfall is the third modern entry set outside the US, following The Short Message in Germany and Silent Hill f in 1960s Japan.

Who You Play

You’re not locked to one character. Alongside Simon, you’ll also step into the shoes of Zoe Ellis, a local nurse played by Kezia Burrows, and Richard Shaw, a corporate figure voiced by Terry O’Quinn. Three people, one disaster, and a lot of shared guilt.

The town’s real wound centers on a struggling fishing community, an energy company called Chapman Energy Group, an offshore rig, and a catastrophe the island never fully recovered from. The Otherworld version of St. Amelia is where that unresolved guilt gets to walk around and take shape.

Simon Ordell starts as close to a blank slate as the game allows, on purpose. A large part of the story is figuring out why someone who clearly doesn’t belong on this island keeps washing back up on the same stretch of shore.

Zoe Ellis runs the local clinic and is the voice that originally called Simon back. Her sequences are some of the most talked-about in early reviews: tense, procedural medical work under pressure, with readings to check and a patient who won’t stay stable.

Richard Shaw is an enigmatic caller with CEO energy, equal parts self-loathing and self-importance. Reaction to the character has been split; some reviewers loved the dynamic between Simon, Zoe, and Richard, while others felt Simon stays too withdrawn and that O’Quinn’s performance reads flatter than expected.

Director Jon McKellan has described the narrative structure as “wide linear”, there’s no dialogue-wheel decision-making every few minutes, but how the ending plays out is shaped by your behavior, specifically how much you explore versus how much you fight.

Endings

There are five endings total. Three are available on a first playthrough, decided by the balance between your Discoveries (documents and clues you find) and your kill count; heavy exploration with minimal violence pushes one direction, an aggressive playthrough pushes another.

The remaining two are secret endings locked behind New Game Plus, and they lean into the series’ long-running tradition of throwing something completely unexpected at you near the credits.

We’re not spelling out specifics here so if you want a full breakdown, that’s easy enough to find once you’ve finished a run.

There’s also a companion comic, Silent Hill: Townfall – The Dock House, written by McKellan and illustrated by David Roach, published through 2000 AD.

How It Plays

Townfall is first-person for the entire game, not just a scripted segment. McKellan’s reasoning is that the show’s central device only works if you’re physically lifting it into frame yourself; put it on a minimap instead, and it stops feeling like a piece of the world and starts feeling like a UI element.

The game runs in a wide 2.35:1 cinematic aspect ratio, which makes blind corners feel a lot more dangerous.

That handheld CRT television is the core mechanic, effectively replacing the radio static of older Silent Hill games.

Silent Hill Townfall gameplay showing interior hallway and office environments

Static intensity tells you when something’s nearby, and tuning the dial gives you a grainy, interference-heavy outline of enemies through walls. It also picks up broadcasts, video fragments, and puzzle clues.

On DualSense, you physically twist and tune it using motion controls. Comparisons to the motion tracker from Alien: Isolation are everywhere, and they’re fair, except this device is also doing narrative work at the same time.

Combat exists, but the game clearly wants you avoiding it. Melee options are improvised; planks, pipes, an axe.

Firearms are in too, including pistols and shotguns. Fights are described as frantic and resource-tight, and a lot of enemies react to sound, so getting spotted usually means a chase you didn’t budget health for.

Simon’s cannula can pull him back from the brink once, but it’s not a second life you can lean on repeatedly.

Saving happens at phone boxes; dial 100 in a very period-accurate touch.

Puzzles are the other half of the experience, and the game doesn’t go easy on you. Difficulty is split into two separate sliders: combat (Story, Normal, Nightmare) and puzzles (Normal, Hinted).

Hinted mode doesn’t change any solutions; it just keeps you from spending forty minutes stuck in a Fife phone box.

You can adjust either slider mid-run without breaking your save. Reviewer opinion is genuinely split here; some call these the best puzzles the series has produced in years, others found the late-game stacking of stealth and puzzles frustrating rather than tense.

Otherworld shifts still happen throughout, turning the fog-covered version of town into rust, static, and things that have no business walking down a high street that still has bunting strung up.

What Reviewers Are Saying

This landed as an 80s-range game that people are actively arguing about, which in Silent Hill terms is close to a compliment.

The praise centers on atmosphere: St. Amelia as a setting, the CRT device, the analog-horror texture, tactile puzzle design, first-person dread, and Pilotpriest’s score sitting comfortably alongside Yamaoka’s legacy without trying to copy it.

Some outlets called it the strongest the series has been in decades, with scores ranging from solid 8-out-of-10s up into the high 80s and even a few perfect scores.

The criticism lands on stealth sections that some reviewers say tip from tense into irritating, monster designs that feel less iconic than the series’ most memorable creatures, and thinner character writing than fans hoping for another deeply drawn protagonist wanted.

A few outlets pointed out that the setup is stronger than the people living in it. Facial animation has drawn some criticism too, and early access saw a handful of PC stutter and crash reports in the first day.

The general read from people who’ve actually finished it: if you’re expecting the combat-forward pace of Silent Hill f, this will feel slow. If you want fog, guilt, analog junk, and a town that feels genuinely lived-in before it feels haunted, this is built for you.

Things You Should Know Before You Buy Silent Hill: Townfall

Person wearing glasses adjusting their hair against a dark blue background
  • It’s a stealth-first Silent Hill. Combat exists, but the game is happier when you avoid it. If that already sounds annoying, watch a stealth section before buying.
  • First-person is the whole game, not a one-off gimmick. If part of your attachment to the SH2 remake was the third-person camera, this will feel different in your hands.
  • It’s fully standalone. No prior Silent Hill knowledge required. It still explores familiar series themes: guilt, loops, a place that reflects the worst thing you’ve done, just through a new cast.
  • $50 is intentional. That’s mid-tier pricing for a 10–15 hour authored horror game from a 30-person studio. Deluxe adds $10 for early access and extras; Standard covers you fine if you just want the game.
  • Xbox players are sitting this one out for now, unless a port shows up later; the same situation as the SH2 remake at launch.
  • PC specs reflect the Unreal Engine 5 tax. 30fps at 1080p Low on minimum spec isn’t impressive. 32 GB RAM is the comfortable recommendation, and expect some shader compilation stutter on first boot.
  • Steam Deck is a maybe, not a yes. Treat it as your backup platform, not your primary one.
  • Set both difficulty sliders deliberately. Combat and puzzle difficulty are independent, so something like Nightmare combat paired with Normal puzzles is a completely valid way to play.
  • Endings track how messy you are. Kills versus documents found. If you want the “good” ending outcome, read what’s in front of you instead of treating every hallway like a fight.
  • Save at phone boxes. Dial 100 whenever you pass one.
  • The tie-in comic is optional flavor, not something you need to read to follow the story.
  • Launch week is crowded, so factor that into whether you jump in immediately or wait.
  • Early Steam review percentages are a snapshot, not a verdict. A mixed-positive score from the first wave of Deluxe players will likely shift as more people finish the game; give it a little time before treating it as final.
  • Content warning: rated M for blood, creature violence, jump scares, and strong language, with hospital and medical distress as a recurring motif. If medical horror specifically isn’t for you, the nurse-focused sequences will likely be the harder part to sit through, not the monsters.

Silent Hill Townfall lands in a franchise era that’s already comfortable taking risks.

The SH2 remake rebuilt a classic, Silent Hill f moved the series to 1960s Japan and got people arguing about combat pacing, and now Townfall has moved to a Scottish fishing village, switched to first-person, and handed players a tiny screaming television instead of a radio. None of these games are trying to repeat the same fog.

Townfall is the analog entry; damp wool, phone boxes, and guilt tied to an oil rig disaster nobody in St. Amelia has moved past.

If that sounds like your kind of miserable getaway, $50 gets you in on PS5 or PC, and St. Amelia is already open.

So, what’s the scariest moment Townfall has thrown at you so far?
