Borderlands MMO: How Fans Brought Borderlands Online Back After 11 Years

The Borderlands MMO is real, and you can play it right now. Borderlands Online was a China-only project that was canceled in 2015. It’s now back as a free fan restoration with English text, 4K support and 120+ FPS.

What Is the Borderlands MMO?

Borderlands Online is a free-to-play online looter-shooter made for the Chinese market. Mainline games like Borderlands 3 and Borderlands 4 are built around small co-op groups. This one turns the same formula into a live-service game with shared hub cities, guilds and PvP arenas.

The History of Borderlands Online

Shanda Games announced Borderlands Online in late 2014 as an officially licensed project for Chinese players. The plan included four classes, co-op missions and PvP arenas. A few closed betas ran in China during 2015.

The project was canceled in November 2015, around the time 2K closed its China studio. It never got a full release and never left China. Outside China, almost nobody got to play it.

In late April 2025, modder and dataminer EpicNNG posted that he had a Borderlands Online build, but he couldn’t get past the login screen. He asked Borderlands fans for help. The team ended up rebuilding the server side from scratch so the client had something to connect to.

The game also had to be translated from Chinese to English. The team resized parts of the UI and rebuilt HUD elements in Photoshop, and they used no generative AI at any point. They brought the release forward from the end of the year because they worried AI tools would make their manual work look pointless.

Launch Week

Players made 1,000 accounts in the first four hours, and a hotfix to upgrade the servers came soon after. The community started cleaning up debug items that new players had spawned in the central hub town. Proper MMO behavior.

Borderlands Online Gameplay Explained

Borderlands Online gameplay sticks to the series loop: shoot, loot, level up, repeat. You run co-op missions and grow your character, but in a shared world built for group play.

The Four Classes

• Soldier: the Roland archetype
• Hunter: the Mordecai archetype
• Siren: the Lilith archetype
• Berserker: the Brick archetype

All four match the original 2009 Vault Hunters. The game is still in playtest, so check skill trees and the level cap in-game.

MMO Systems

• Hub cities: customizable social spaces, like Sanctuary in Borderlands 2 but shared with other players
• Guilds: a guild/clan system for organized groups
• Gun crafting: build on top of the weapons you loot
• Restock stations: resupply points from the original feature set
• PvP arenas: player-versus-player fights alongside the PvE content

The mainline series is known for procedurally generated guns from manufacturers like Maliwan, Jakobs, Vladof, Torgue, Hyperion, Dahl and Tediore. Loot rarity runs from Common to Rare, Epic, Legendary and Pearlescent.

What Changed From the Original

• Golden Keys: once a paid currency, now earned through play. The mainline games give them out through SHiFT Codes instead.
• Grenade mods: left out, since the original never implemented them
• Localization: mostly English, with a few Chinese textures kept for style
• Spawns and balance: may differ from the original
• Visuals: 4K support, 120+ FPS and unlocked FOV

How to Play Borderlands Online Today

1. Go to the official BLOL website (blolgame.com) and read the FAQ.
2. Join the project’s Discord for news and server status.
3. Create a BLOL account. You need one for both online and offline play.
4. Download the client from the site, install it and log in.

BLOL is completely free, with no paid features or microtransactions. If the fan-hosted servers go down, you can run the game locally on your PC, but you lose multiplayer. Expect bugs, broken skills and animations, and server outages.

Is the Borderlands Online Revival Legal?

BLOL is an unofficial fan project, and Gearbox and 2K don’t endorse it. EpicNNG says Take-Two never asked the team to stop. He also tagged Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford in a post and got no public reply.

He expects a takedown eventually, and says he won’t help bring the game back if a cease and desist arrives. If you want to try it, go soon.

• 2012: Borderlands 2 brings Handsome Jack, Sanctuary, Eridium and raid bosses

• 2019: Borderlands 3 adds Takedowns, seasonal events and, later, crossplay

• 2026: BLOL opens its public playtest in English

Borderlands Legends is a separate 2012 mobile spin-off. Borderlands Online is the franchise’s only MMO, and its playtest build is now archived on the Internet Archive.
