TL;DR

  • Gamescom 2026 runs from August 24 to 30 in Cologne, Germany, featuring a sold-out exhibition for the first time in its history.
  • The central theme of this year's event is 'Games spark excitement for the future,' focusing on social and democratic themes and highlighting small studios.
  • CD Projekt Red announced a free remaster of The Witcher 3, including both expansions, alongside a new expansion set to release in 2027.

Gamescom 2026 is underway in Cologne, and the show already has its defining moment before the public halls have even opened.

Opening Night Live wrapped Tuesday night in Hall 1, the exhibition floor sold out for the first time in the event’s history, and the closing announcement of the broadcast, a free Witcher 3 remaster paired with a new Geralt expansion, is what most of the internet is arguing about this morning.

So we cross-checked every release window against the official program, and broke down what the playable demos actually look like on the floor. Here’s the complete picture.

Gamescom 2026 runs the full week of August 24 to 30 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, Germany, but the schedule splits into three distinct phases that matter for anyone tracking the event from home.

OTHER GAMES

The developer conference, gamescom dev, ran August 23 to 25 and closed with the Dev Awards on August 24. Opening Night Live aired the evening of August 25 out of Hall 1, ahead of the show floor opening to the public.

The exhibition itself runs August 26 to 30, with Wednesday the 26th reserved for trade visitors and media, plus a limited window of public access from 1:00 p.m. for Wildcard ticket holders (those sold out). The four full public days are Thursday through Sunday, August 27 to 30.

If you’re trying to plan a visit around this year’s event, that Wednesday trade day is the one most casual fans miss. The floor is open, but it’s a quieter, more industry-heavy crowd until the Wildcard window opens in the afternoon.

Theme

Organizers built this year’s program around the line “Games machen Lust auf Zukunft,” or “Games spark excitement for the future.”

In practice, that meant two curatorial threads running through the keynote and the floor: games built around social and democratic themes, and small studios that are punching well above their headcount.

You can see both in the lineup: a charity speedrunning block dedicated to Gaming for Democracy sits on the same schedule as a 420-company indie hall that grew by 16% year over year.

Scale

This is a record-setting Gamescom on almost every metric that matters. The show floor covers roughly 233,000 square meters, close to 33 football fields, and it sold out entirely for the first time since the event launched. Organizers are already discussing an expansion for 2027 to handle the overflow.

More than 1,600 exhibitors from around 67 countries are on site this year, with roughly 70% of them based outside Germany.

For reference, 2025 drew 1,568 exhibitors and 357,000 visitors. The indie hall alone grew from 364 companies last year to over 420 this year.

Twenty-three countries brought national pavilions, and Opening Night Live filled Hall 1 with roughly 5,000 attendees who paid €34.50 for a seat. Organizers expect at least 350,000 total visitors across the week.

Opening Hours For the Public

  • Wednesday, August 26: Wildcard access only, 1:00 to 7:00 p.m.
  • Thursday and Friday, August 27 to 28: 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday, August 29 to 30: 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Saturday day tickets are already sold out, and general public tickets for Thursday, Friday, and Sunday are running around €31.50 standard or €22.50 discounted (Saturday was €41 while it lasted).

Every ticket includes local VRS public transit on the day of your visit, and there is no on-site ticket sales window this year, so anyone showing up without a ticket is out of luck. Kids under four don’t get in at all, and ages four to six enter free with ID.

Gamescom Opening Night Live: What Actually Dropped

Geoff Keighley and Eefje “sjokz” Depoortere hosted the pre-show at 7:30 p.m. CEST and the main broadcast at 8:00 p.m., and the room was packed enough that Xbox’s Asha Sharma was sitting in the front row for it.

Keighley opened with a personal note about his father’s death since last year’s show and a direct acknowledgment of the industry’s layoffs and hardware price increases, before pivoting into the actual lineup. More than 70 titles showed up across the pre-show and main broadcast combined.

The Moment That Owned the Room

CD Projekt Red closed the show, and the reaction in the hall backs up what’s happening online right now. The studio confirmed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered as a free upgrade for anyone who already owns the base game, arriving September 29, 2026, and it isn’t a token refresh.

The remaster ships with ray tracing, reworked combat, upgraded traversal and mount handling, smarter monster AI, new sign effects, a redone skill tree, transmog, new finishers, an expanded photo mode, and accessibility and UI improvements across the board. Both existing expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are included free for anyone who owns the original game.

Geralt surrounded by monsters in moonlit forest scene from The Witcher 3 song of the past

CDPR paired that with Songs of the Past, a new expansion set in a region called Letten, landing in 2027 with a noticeably darker tone than the previous two DLCs.

Geralt fights with a chain weapon this time, a nod to the kama-style blade from the original Witcher intro cinematic, and level design lead Miles Tost framed it on stage as “one more story” with the character rather than a lead-in to a new arc. Witcher 4 did not appear anywhere in the broadcast. CDPR has that game locked to 2028.

Community reaction across Reddit and X lines up unusually well for a fanbase that argues about everything: surprise that a full remaster plus both legacy expansions is free in 2026 is the dominant sentiment, with the main caveat being timing.

The remaster lands in four weeks, the new expansion doesn’t ship until next year, so plenty of players are treating this as a reason to replay now and wait on the story content.

Chinese and Korean publishers had an outsized presence this year: Hoyoverse, NetEase, Krafton, NC, Ti Games, and Eclipse Glow all had slots in the broadcast, which says as much about where the industry’s growth is coming from as any single trailer does.

Online reaction to the middle stretch of the show was split. The Witcher segment landed well across the board, but a chunk of the chat and comment sections called the mid-show run of trailers repetitive, a normal complaint for any two-hour Keighley broadcast, though it’s worth naming since it shaped how the show is being discussed today.

The Show Floor Opens August 26

Entering the consumer halls starting August 26 requires a tactical approach, as the hardware and playable builds on display are staggering.

Gamescom show floor with Nintendo booth and gaming exhibition displays

Xbox, Hall 7

Xbox is marking its 25th anniversary with a 140-station, 25-game setup, and accessibility is a genuine focus this year rather than an afterthought.

The booth includes Adaptive Controllers, a quiet room, height-adjustable desks, and ASL, BSL, and DGS interpreters on site.

Playable highlights include the first public campaign demo for Gears of War: E-Day, 6v6 multiplayer for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, a live demo theater for Playground’s Fable, plus hands-on stations for Minecraft Dungeons II, Metro 2039, Alien: Isolation 2, and Stranger Than Heaven.

Star Wars Zero Company, Valor Mortis, and Blood of Dawnwalker are also confirmed across various Xbox booth lists. Xbox is running live show-floor broadcasts on Wednesday and Thursday for anyone following from home.

Nintendo, Hall 9

Nintendo’s booth sits right at the hall entrance, and trade press are reporting Switch 2 playables for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, notably the first CoD on Nintendo hardware since Ghosts on Wii U, along with Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Orbitals, EA Sports FC 27, 007 First Light, Minecraft Dungeons II, Donkey Kong Bananza, and Mario Kart World.

Expect photo spots, a stage program, and scheduled tournaments running throughout the week.

Capcom, Hall 9

Capcom’s floor lineup centers on Onimusha: Way of the Sword, which launches September 4, alongside Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen and Mega Man: Dual Override. Rocket Beans is running the stage program at the booth.

Ubisoft, Hall 6.1

Rayman Legends Retold is the visual centerpiece, with 15 two-player co-op stations and an inflatable Rayman greeting the queue. Also playable: Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Black Flag Resynced, Anno 117: Pax Romana, The Division 2, Rainbow Six Siege, and The Crew Motorfest. Community Lounge panels run all week.

Other Confirmed Names On the Floor

Konami has a Silent Hill-themed area, and the floor also includes Tencent, Embark, Level Infinite, Bandai Namco, EA, Sega, CD Projekt Red, Krafton, NetEase, Deep Silver, Plaion, Focus, The LEGO Group, Pearl Abyss with Crimson Desert Enhanced, NC, Giants, aerosoft, and a large Asian media and publisher pavilion block that includes Bilibili, Douyin, TikTok, INVEN, Ruliweb, and ThisIsGame.

What is Not on the Floor

PlayStation has no consumer booth again this year, the seventh straight year Sony has skipped a physical presence, though PlayStation titles still show up on individual publisher stations.

Rockstar has no playable GTA VI build on site, and German trade outlets described that as extremely unlikely to change. GTA VI’s November 19 release date is still hanging over the entire 2026 calendar regardless.

The Rest of the Week

Gamescom Opening Night Live stage performances with speakers and displays

The show doesn’t stop at the exhibition halls, and this is the part most people following from home skip.

gamescom dev ran August 23 to 25 with roughly 220 sessions and 390 speakers, including talks from Sony Interactive, Remedy, Ubisoft, CDPR, Insomniac, IO Interactive, and Epic. The Dev Awards were handed out August 24.

Future Games Show airs Wednesday, August 26, around 1:00 p.m. ET or 7:00 p.m. CEST, followed by a live segment from the show floor. Expect 40-plus games in that lineup.

Awesome Indies, run with IGN, follows on Thursday, and FGS closes out the week with a Best of Gamescom recap on Sunday.

Gamescom GDQ is the first European edition of Games Done Quick, running Friday through Sunday at the Konrad-Adenauer-Saal for roughly 10 hours a day, raising money for Gaming for Democracy. Expect featured runs from Hades II, Hollow Knight: Silksong, and Ocarina of Time.

The Gamescom Award opened voting August 26, with winners announced live August 28 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on the Hall 7 studio stage, combining jury and community votes.

Cosplayers in elaborate costumes at Gamescom convention gathering

A cosplay contest runs Saturday at 5:00 p.m. on the Social Stage, and the gamescom City Festival takes over Hohenzollernring and Rudolfplatz on Saturday and Sunday with free outdoor stages, headlined by Thees Uhlmann and The Notwist. The city put €350,000 into that program, so you can experience part of Gamescom without buying a ticket at all.

Practical notes if you’re attending in person: Cologne has active rail and tram construction, so pad extra travel time. Parking is tight, day parking runs around €20, and ONL attendees used a shuttle from lot P21.

New this year, the venue added free drinking water dispensers, and cloakrooms at every entrance are free. Hotel prices near the Messe spiked hard for the week, with rooms at Motel One Messe reportedly quoted above €500 a night at peak demand.

How the Industry is Reading It

Show directors Tim Endres and Stefan Heikhaus said the goal this year wasn’t cramming in more booths, it was building the widest mix of exhibitors since 2009, and the ONL lineup backs that up.

Compared to a peak-E3 year, there were fewer Western AAA world premieres, a much heavier presence of East Asian live-service and co-op action titles, a wave of remakes and remasters, and a genuinely large indie layer running alongside all of it.

A few takeaways stand out from press in the hall and from CDPR’s own community team on site. The Witcher 3 still moves the room more than most unannounced 2026 to 2027 sequels do.

Square Enix putting Final Fantasy VII Revelation on every platform simultaneously marks a real shift after two straight timed PlayStation windows.

4A Games putting “Proudly made in Ukraine” directly on a Metro stage in Cologne reads as a deliberate statement, not incidental framing.

Switch 2 is now a legitimate show-floor platform in its own right, backed by a Modern Warfare port Nintendo hasn’t had in 13 years. And the sold-out floor combined with 2027 expansion talk is arguably the bigger business story of the week: demand that used to spread across the calendar concentrated here and ran the venue out of physical space.

What isn’t happening this week matters too. A Sony State of Play is widely expected as counter-programming to Gamescom, but nothing is confirmed as of this writing. There’s no Witcher 4 gameplay anywhere in the program, and no playable GTA VI on the floor.

If you’re only following one thread for the rest of the week from home, make it this: the Xbox booth streams Wednesday and Thursday, Future Games Show airs Wednesday night CEST, Awesome Indies runs Thursday, and hands-on impressions of E-Day, Fable, Onimusha, Townfall, and Metro 2039 will start landing as soon as the floor opens tomorrow.

Gamescom 2026 already has its narrative locked before the public halls have opened a single door: a sold-out floor, a record exhibitor count, and a closing Witcher announcement that turned a fairly conventional ONL lineup into the story of the week.

The next four days will show us if the show floor demos back up the trailers, particularly on Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, and Metro 2039.
