What Is DramaBox?

DramaBox is a vertical short-drama app. Not Netflix, not TikTok clips. It’s like serialized soaps cut into 60- to 120-second portrait episodes, usually 40 to 100 episodes a season, with every cut landing on a cliffhanger.

The company behind it is StoryMatrix Pte. Ltd., based in Singapore, launched in April 2023 and backed by Beijing’s Dianzhong Technology.

Chen Ruiqing is the founder and chairman. The playbook: license and produce China’s short-drama format, known as duanju, then push it worldwide with dubs, subtitles, and original English-language shoots.

The company’s own numbers from late 2024 put DramaBox in 200-plus countries with 2,000-plus series, 90 million registered users, and roughly 30 million monthly actives at the time. 

Those figures have moved since. DramaBox’s CEO told The Ankler the app now sits at more than 50 million monthly active users, and Google Play crossed 100 million installs by August 2025.

Treat any single number here as a snapshot, not a fixed stat, because a platform growing this fast updates its own press page every few months.

The Origin Story in One Paragraph

DramaBox didn’t invent vertical drama. It industrialized the export of it. The early catalog was simple: buy Chinese short dramas, translate them, and push them onto phones in the US, Brazil, and Southeast Asia.

Then the company started shooting its own originals, opened a Los Angeles studio under head of studio Shicong Zhu, partnered with US production vendor Purple Filter, and in July 2025 landed a spot in the Disney Accelerator, the same program that previously worked with Epic Games and ElevenLabs.

Chen has talked publicly about a five-year target of $3 billion in annual revenue. For context, 2024 figures cited by industry trade press put DramaBox at roughly $323 million in revenue and about $10 million in net profit, which matters because most competitors in this space spend heavily on ads and still lose money.

DramaBox is one of the few that has turned a profit at scale.

How a DramaBox Series is Built to Hijack Your Thumb

Executives have said the quiet part out loud: normal TV pacing is too slow for a phone screen. 

Zhu’s LA studio alone released more than 60 titles in a single year, and a series can go from script to phone in months instead of seasons.

The formula repeats across nearly every title:

• The first 5 to 10 episodes are free. That’s the hook.
• Episodes 6 to 8 are where the real plot twist lands: a secret baby, a fake marriage, a hidden CEO, and a switched-at-birth reveal.
• Every episode cuts off mid-confrontation.
• Autoplay keeps rolling into the next episode by default, and if you let it, it spends your coins without asking twice.

The genre mix still leans hard into romance with a twist: CEO romances, mafia plots, revenge arcs, werewolf leads, contract marriages, hidden heirs, strong female leads who get even. 

DramaBox’s head of global content, Richard Zhou, has talked about pushing past that formula into family series, choose-your-own-adventure formats, and even kids’ animation, with product placement floated as a future revenue line and a New York office now on the map.

The dubbing runs at industrial scale too. Creator-side writeups point to Resemble AI voice cloning for English, Spanish, Hindi, and Portuguese tracks, which explains why some English dubs sound almost human but slightly off. That’s not always a bad actor.

Sometimes it’s a cloned one. DramaBox lists 17 supported languages on its own site, including English, Chinese (simplified and traditional), Spanish, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Portuguese, Filipino, Arabic, Polish, Italian, Turkish, and Vietnamese.

Money 101: This is the Part That Wrecks People

Store ratings look great on the surface. iOS sits around 4.8 across hundreds of thousands of ratings, and Google Play sits in the 4.3 range with millions of reviews and more than 100 million installs.

Read the 1-star reviews and a different story shows up. The app itself is legitimate. The billing is where people get burned.

There are three ways to keep watching past the free hook, and each has a catch:

1. Ads: watch a rewarded ad, unlock one episode, hit a daily cap. Reviewers repeatedly report ads that fail to credit the unlock.
2. Coins: buy a pack, spend coins per episode. Community math lands most locked episodes somewhere between $0.15 and $0.50 each, so a full 70-to-80-episode season paid in coins alone can run anywhere from about $15 to $50 depending on which bundle you buy. Small packs carry no bonus coins. Bigger bundles do. Coins can expire, and autoplay can burn through a balance before you notice.
3. Subscription: this tier generates the loudest complaints, because the price on your screen is not one global number. Reported live pricing across 2025 and into 2026 shows an entry-level weekly plan around $3.99 to $5.99 (often a discounted first week or two), a separate premium or VIP weekly tier commonly quoted at $16.99 to $19.99, and an annual plan that multiple sources put at $49.99 with some third-party resellers listing it higher. Regional pricing swings hard too: a September 2026 pricing snapshot put Turkey at the cheapest end near $7.17 a week and Australia near $21.35 a week, a gap of close to 200%.

Do the math on the expensive weekly tier and it adds up fast. $17.99 a week comes out to roughly $935 a year. $49.99 a year is a pizza order. Same app, different button.

One detail worth knowing before you buy any pass: subscribing doesn’t always unlock everything. Several titles still gate specific episodes behind coins even for paying subscribers, so check the series page before you assume a weekly pass means unlimited everything.

Canceling has to happen through your Apple or Google subscription settings, not by deleting the app. Deleting the app does nothing to a recurring charge.

Cancel at least 24 hours before renewal, and if a charge still lands after you canceled, that’s a dispute for the App Store or Google Play, not something DramaBox support can reverse from their side.

What’s On It Right Now

The home screen in late 2026 still leans on forbidden romance plus the occasional mecha plot.

Titles that keep showing up across official promos, ranking roundups, and catalog listings include Deny Me, Dragon King (a human heroine, a secret daughter, and a dragon king love interest), Tempest: The Last Mecha (a janitor who’s secretly the Mech King), Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis (a 64-episode enemies-to-lovers arc), Pucked by My Brother’s Rival (a 51-episode hockey romance), Watch Out, I’m the Lady Boss, and Cohabitation 101, a 30-episode Korean vertical series that also lives in the DramaBox catalog.

The titles read like fanfiction tags because that’s essentially what they are, dressed up with a camera crew.

People mock the premises and then finish episode 60 at 1 a.m. anyway. Category reviews put the release pace at around 200 new titles a month, and quality varies by production. Some LA-shot English originals look like a real set.

Some licensed catalog titles look like a mall atrium with a folding chair for a backdrop. The recommendation algorithm doesn’t grade on production value. It only cares if you tap next.

What Communities Say

The unfiltered talk lives on Reddit, in hubs like r/dramabox, r/Vertical_Dramas, and r/verticalstorytelling, and the recurring complaints are consistent across review sites too: accidental coin-pack purchases, a weekly renewal someone thought was monthly, coins burned by autoplay, ads that don’t credit an unlock, and subscriptions canceled in-app that Google or Apple kept charging anyway. The app is real. The interface is built to keep the meter running. Those are two separate facts.

A newer thread of complaints centers on AI-generated content. A May 2026 Reddit post titled roughly “every drama on the new section is AI generated” went viral inside the community.

The Disney Thing, Without the Press-Release Fog

In July 2025, Disney named DramaBox to its Accelerator program alongside three other companies: Animaj, Haddy, and LIMINAL Space.

Disney doesn’t publish the size of its investment in Accelerator companies, but the program itself connects growth-stage companies with Disney’s internal teams for mentorship and possible collaborations.

At the 2025 Demo Day, Disney Publishing confirmed talks with DramaBox about adapting a slate of young-adult fantasy novels into original microdramas, and DramaBox and Disney Music discussed turning full albums into vertical-video shorts.

None of that means Disney+ is absorbing DramaBox. It means a legacy studio is studying a format that already turns a profit on phones, and DramaBox gets a credibility stamp and access to Disney’s development resources in return.

DramaBox’s own executives have framed the goal as reaching American and international audiences with more genre range than the current billionaire-and-secret-baby formula allows, and they know that range is currently thin.

One more data point worth flagging: in April 2026, DramaBox became the first short-drama app to run global programmatic advertising through The Trade Desk, which turns ad revenue into a second serious income stream alongside coins and subscriptions.
