Genshin Impact Stygian Onslaught Explanation

Stygian Onslaught is a permanent high-level challenge domain located in Bishui Plain, Liyue. It pits you against three intense battlefield bosses, each getting progressively harder with six levels of difficulty ranging from Normal to Dire.

From Menacing difficulty onwards, you can’t reuse characters across bosses. So yeah, you better come prepared with more than one cracked team. Read these key features below:
- Solo or Co-Op supported (with some restrictions)
- 3 Boss Battles per run
- 6 Difficulty Levels: Normal → Dire
- Weekly Exalted Ones for stat buffs
- Resin-based Artifact farming
- Epic rewards: Primogems, Dust of Enlightenment, Weapon Skins.
When is Stygian Onslaught Available?
- Main Duration: June 25 – July 29, 2025
- Disturbance Outbreak Phase: June 25 – July 5, 2025
The Disturbance Outbreak phase is where things get cool:
- You can farm any artifact set (with Resin!)
- You earn Dire Prestige to score bonus 5-Star artifacts
- After this phase ends, the Resin-farming feature disappears, so don’t sleep on it!

How to Unlock Stygian Onslaught in Genshin Impact
Before you start wrecking bosses, check these basic requirements to get in:
- Adventure Rank 20+
- Complete Archon Quest Prologue: Act III – “Song of the Dragon and Freedom”
- Finish Event Quest: Tumult Subduer in Stygian Onslaught: Incursion Repeller
If you want the full lore-rich experience, finish the Interlude Chapter “Perilous Trail” too. Not required, but worth it!
To unlock the quest, just teleport to the Waypoint near Sal Terrae and trigger the cutscene with Yelan and Keqing.
How to Play in Genshin Impact Onslaught Mode
So you’ve unlocked Stygian Onslaught? Awesome. But now what? This mode isn’t your average Domain run where you just spam your skills and bounce.
There’s actual strategy, team planning, and timing involved. Let’s break it all down so you don’t get steamrolled on your first try.
1. Choose Your Difficulty Wisely
When you first hop in, you’ll see six difficulty tiers:
Difficulty | Enemy Level | Features |
---|---|---|
Normal I | 40 | Chill mode, no mechanics |
Advancing II | 70 | Slightly tougher, still manageable |
Hard III | 90 | Resin farming unlocked |
Menacing IV | 100 | No repeat characters allowed |
Fearless V | 105 | Buffed bosses, high risk |
Dire VI | 110 | Extreme mode, solo only, weapon skin rewards! |
You can’t skip ahead, cause each difficulty must be cleared to unlock the next one. And yes, Dire is brutal, but the loot is fire.
2. Battle Through 3 Boss Arenas
Each round of Onslaught features three unique bosses, and each one brings its brand of pain:
- Battlefield 1: Hydro Tulpa – Watch out for healing mechanics!
- Battlefield 2: Lava Dragon Statue – Needs quick Pyro reactions to break through.
- Battlefield 3: Overseer Automaton – Freeze this guy solid before he fries you.
Each boss fight happens one after another, and you can’t use the same character twice starting from Menacing difficulty. So… bring three full teams!
3. Build Separate Teams
This is where your account depth is put to the test. You’ll need:
- A Cryo-heavy team for Freezing or Melt in Battlefield 1 or 3
- A Burning team (Dendro + Pyro) for Battlefield 2
- Shielders, healers, and buffers to survive harder rounds
- Avoid bringing Hydro DPS to Battlefield 1 unless you like healing your enemies.
Use the Exalted Ones, buffed community-favorite characters–if you own them. They’ll get you bonus stats and smoother clears.
4. Co-Op or Solo? Depends!
Here’s the deal:
- Normal–Hard (I–III): Co-Op friendly, use matchmaking or friend invites
- Menacing–Dire (IV–VI): No matchmaking; all players must be in the same world
- Dire: Solo-only. No shortcuts here!
Team up for earlier stages if you’re still testing comps or just want to vibe with friends.
But if you want the Radiant Phantasm weapon skins, you’ll need to solo Dire within 180 seconds. Good luck, guys.
5. Spend Resin for Artifacts & Prestige
Once you unlock Hard (Difficulty III), you can start spending Original, Condensed, Fragile, or Transient Resin to:
- Farm artifacts from any set
- Earn Dire Prestige → 120 Prestige = bonus 5-star artifact
- Hit 1,200 Prestige = 1 Dust of Enlightenment
Don’t wait! This Resin-spending feature is only available during the first 10 days of the event (Disturbance Outbreak).
6. Use Ley Line Mechanics
Higher difficulties come with unique Ley Line Disturbances:
- No reusing characters across bosses
- Reduced damage unless specific conditions are met
- Some bosses are enhanced with new attacks
Learn these mechanics and build around them.
For example, using Cryo in Battlefield 3 can debuff the Automaton’s defenses significantly; essential if you’re going solo.

Stygian Co-Op: How It Works in Genshin Impact
Just to make sure, this event mode also supports Co-Op, letting you squad up and take down some of the toughest bosses together.
But it’s not as straightforward as hopping into a Ley Line and smashing hilichurls. So, how exactly does Co-Op work in Stygian Onslaught? Let’s uncover it.
First, What Co-Op Actually Supports
Co-Op in Stygian Onslaught is available for most difficulties, but it comes with some restrictions:
Difficulty | Co-Op Status |
---|---|
Normal I | Full Co-Op with matchmaking |
Advancing II | Full Co-Op with matchmaking |
Hard III | Full Co-Op with matchmaking |
Menacing IV | Co-Op only if you’re in the same world |
Fearless V | Same-world Co-Op only |
Dire VI | Solo only |
You can matchmake up to Hard III. After that, you’ll need to coordinate and join the same world manually for Menacing and Fearless. Dire is a solo-only showdown.
Besides making everything less stressful (and way more fun), Co-Op mode offers several advantages:
- Shared Elemental Coverage: You can specialize and balance your elements across the team.
- Shared Resources: Team members can focus on buffs, shields, healing, or raw damage.
- Bigger Reaction Combos: Coordinate reactions like Melt, Burning, and Freeze more effectively.
- Less Strain on Your Account: Don’t have 3 built teams? Let your friends carry, no shame in that.
How to Set Up a Stygian Co-Op Run
1. Unlock Stygian Onslaught First
Make sure you’ve hit Adventure Rank 20 and completed the required quests (Song of the Dragon and Freedom and the event unlock quest Tumult Subduer).
Without this, you won’t even see the mode.
2. Choose a Stage and Difficulty
Pick from the three Battlefields (Hydro Tulpa, Lava Dragon, Automaton). Make sure everyone agrees on the difficulty–you all need to meet the same unlock conditions.
3. Join the Same World
For Menacing or Fearless, all players must be in the same world.
No random matchmaking here, so invite your friends or grab teammates from the Co-Op Boards.
4. Lock In Your Roles
Coordinate who’s running DPS, support, Cryo applicator, shielder, or healer.
Avoid duplicate roles (unless it’s Cryo, then double up!). Build around the boss mechanics for each stage.
5. Fight Together, Win Together
Clear all three boss fights in the stage together. Share the glory, and maybe the wipe if your comp is off.
Best Practices for Co-Op Success
- Bring One Cryo for Hydro Tulpa – Someone must one-shot the Mini-Tulpas to stop the boss’s HP regen.
- Burning is OP for the Lava Dragon – Mix 2 Dendro + 2 Pyro across your team.
- Double Cryo is Key for the Automaton – More Cryo = more RES shred = more damage time.
- Designate a Shielder – Zhongli or Baizhu can keep the team from eating dirt.
- Communicate Roles Early – Don’t wait until the loading screen to decide who’s the healer.
Hop on Discord or use in-game chat to call out rotations or boss phases. Even a little communication goes a long way in Co-Op.
Can You Earn All Rewards in Co-Op?
Mostly, yes. But not everything.
- Primogems, Mora, Hero’s Wit: Earnable in Co-Op up to Fearless
- Dust of Enlightenment: Available in Menacing and Fearless, even in Co-Op
- Dire Rewards (Weapon Skins): Solo-only. No Co-Op shortcuts here
If you’re chasing the Radiant Phantasm weapon skins, you’ll need to solo Dire difficulty; Co-Op won’t count.

Best Team Compositions in Stygian Onslaught
Each boss stage in this mode is built differently, with unique mechanics, elemental weaknesses, and team requirements.
Having the right team composition is the secret sauce to clearing higher difficulties (and getting those weapon skins!).
Oh, and don’t forget about the Exalted Ones. These are 16 characters chosen based on real players who cleared Dire difficulty. But, Exalted Ones don’t give you access to new characters because you gotta own them to benefit from their buffs.
If you already own any of these characters, they’ll get massive ATK, DEF, and HP buffs to help you out.
Let’s break down the best team comps for each stage, including alternatives and Co-Op suggestions!
Stage 1: Hydro Tulpa (Melt Team Meta)
Goal: Stop Mini-Tulpas from buffing the main boss by instantly deleting them with Cryo.
Recommended Team (Solo):
- Mavuika – Pyro DPS
- Xilonen – Cryo Support
- Bennett – Buffs + Heals
- Citlali – Cryo Burst/Utility.
Melt teams hit hard and fast. Pyro + Cryo reactions obliterate the Hydro Tulpa and its pesky clones.
And, Cryo units can one-shot Mini-Tulpas, stopping the boss from healing or going Super Saiyan.
Co-Op Team Comp:
- DPS: Clorinde or Hu Tao
- DPS: Mavuika or Navia
- Cryo Support: Wriothesley or Ganyu
- Shield/Heal: Baizhu or Zhongli
Just make sure at least one player brings Cryo to stop those Mini-Tulpas. No Cryo = Regen party for the boss = pain.
Stage 2: Lava Dragon Statue (Burning Team = EZ Mode)
Goal: Apply constant Pyro and Dendro to stun and control the fight.
Recommended Team (Solo):
- Kinich – Dendro DPS
- Mavuika – Pyro sub-DPS
- Emilie – Dendro Enabler
- Iansan – Pyro applicator or flex slot.
The Lava Dragon can’t stand the heat. Burning reactions apply rapid DoT and are the best way to keep it stunned and manageable.
You’ll want fast and frequent elemental application, not just raw damage.
Co-Op Team Comp:
- Pyro DPS: Arlecchino or Bennett
- Pyro Support: Thoma or Xiangling
- Dendro DPS: Kinich or Collei
- Dendro Support: Baizhu or Nahida
Balance is key: 2 Pyro + 2 Dendro gives you max reaction uptime without overlapping too much.
Stage 3: Overseer Automaton (Freeze/RES Shred Team)
Goal: Use Cryo to trigger enemy RES debuff and extend damage windows.
Recommended Team (Solo):
- Skirk – Cryo main DPS
- Furina – Hydro off-field damage + healing
- Yelan – Hydro burst support
- Escoffier – Utility/flex.
Automaton RES drops when hit by Cryo, not necessarily Cryo damage. So, high-frequency Cryo application is more important than raw DPS.
Freeze comps also prevent it from entering Flow Momentum, reducing the chaos.
Co-Op Team Comp:
- Cryo DPS: Skirk or Wriothesley
- Cryo Support: Shenhe or Ganyu
- Hydro DPS/Enabler: Furina or Neuvillette
- Utility/Shield/Heal: Escoffier, Kokomi, or Layla
In Co-Op, always bring two Cryo units minimum. One Cryo applicator is not enough to keep up with the Automaton’s tempo.
Rotate Based on Exalted Ones
Each day, the Exalted Ones update based on top-performing players who cleared Dire difficulty.
If you see someone like Wriothesley or Arlecchino on the list and you own them, use them! They’ll get free stat boosts, making tough fights way smoother.
Stygian Onslaught Event Rewards
For real, you’re not diving into Stygian Onslaught just for the thrill of getting smacked around by elite bosses.
You’re here for the loot, right? And, Genshin Impact’s Stygian Onslaught rewards make the grind worth it.
Completion Rewards by Difficulty
You’ll earn rewards based on the highest difficulty tier you clear, and yes, you can stack them!
So if you start from Normal I and work your way up to Dire VI, you’ll collect every reward tier along the way.
Difficulty | Primogems | Other Rewards |
---|---|---|
Normal I | 150 | 100,000 Mora + 5 Hero’s Wit |
Advancing II | 150 | 100,000 Mora + 5 Hero’s Wit |
Hard III | 150 | 100,000 Mora + 5 Hero’s Wit |
Menacing IV | – | 1 Dust of Enlightenment + 100,000 Mora + 5 Hero’s Wit |
Fearless V | – | 1 Dust of Enlightenment (Solo only) + 100,000 Mora + 5 Hero’s Wit |
Dire VI | – | Weapon Skin: Radiant Phantasm: Incursion Repeller |
Dire VI (180s clear) | – | Weapon Skin Upgrade: Radiant Phantasm: Sublimation |
You get 450 Primogems total for clearing the first 3 difficulties–nice top-up for your next pull!
Exclusive Weapon Skins
If you’re all about flexing in style, this is your moment. Clear Dire VI in solo mode and you’ll score the limited-time Radiant Phantasm: Incursion Repeller, a cosmetic that lets you change your weapon’s appearance.
Beat it in under 180 seconds? You get the Sublimation version, an even more radiant variant that screams, “I solo’d Dire and lived to tell the tale.”
These skins expire when the next Stygian season drops, so rock ‘em while you can!
Dust of Enlightenment: Rare Item Alert
Dust of Enlightenment is a valuable progression material used to level up certain character abilities or talents in special systems.
It’s not farmable in regular domains, making this event one of the best (and only) places to get them. Here’s how to earn them:
- Clear Menacing IV (any mode) → 1 Dust
- Clear Fearless V (solo) → 1 Dust
- Earn 1,200 Dire Prestige → 1 Bonus Dust
You can walk away with up to 3 Dusts of Enlightenment per event cycle if you go all-in.
Dire Prestige: The Resin-Based Bonus System
From Hard III difficulty and up, you can spend Resin during the Disturbance Outbreak (first 10 days of the event) to farm artifacts and rack up Dire Prestige.
Resin Type | Prestige Earned |
---|---|
Original Resin (x1) | 20 Prestige |
Condensed Resin (x1) | 40 Prestige |
Fragile/Transient Resin (x1) | 60 Prestige |
Every 120 Prestige = 1 bonus 5-star Artifact. At 1,200 Prestige, you get:
- One Dust of Enlightenment
- Ten 5-star Artifacts in total (if you spend Resin efficiently)
Best resin usage in the game? Possibly. It’s like condensed value on steroids.
Summary of All Stygian Onslaught Rewards
Reward | How to Get It |

Primogems x450 | Complete Normal, Advancing, and Hard challenges |
Dust of Enlightenment x3 | Menacing, Fearless (Solo), and 1,200 Dire Prestige |
