What is Subnautica 2? (And Why You Should Care)

Player piloting submersible vessel in alien ocean world at sunset

Developed by Unknown Worlds Entertainment, Subnautica 2 is the third entry in the series, following the 2018 original and 2021’s Below Zero.

It runs on Unreal Engine 5 and drops you onto an entirely new water world as a Pioneer from the colony ship CICADA. No Peepers; not even Reaper Leviathans. A completely fresh alien ocean with its own rules.

The game is available on PC (Steam, Epic Games Store), Xbox Series X|S, and is Day One on Xbox Game Pass. Cross-platform co-op is fully supported for up to four players.

Core Survival Systems: What’s Actually New

subnautica 2 gameplay and core survival systems

    1. The NoA Device and Blackbox Progression

Gone is the purely open-ended drift of the original. Subnautica 2 structures early exploration through the NoA device, which picks up signals from blackboxes and points of interest scattered across the ocean.

Each signal sends you somewhere; you return to base for the next update, and you use the downtime to explore and gather.

It’s a cleaner loop than the original’s “stare at the seabed, hoping to find a fragment” approach, though plenty of that still exists off the critical path.

    2. BioMods and Angel Combs: The DNA System

This is the biggest mechanical shift in the sequel. Besides you crafting suit modules, you also mutating your body.

Angel Combs are glowing, organic structures scattered across the ocean floor, and interacting with their pink bulbs permanently upgrades your biology.

    There are two categories:

    • Active Biomods (triggered with Left Shift): Dash (dodge in any direction), Pathfinder (release pheromone trail for navigation)
    • Passive Biomods (auto-activate): Seaskimmer (faster movement near seafloor), Oxygen Control (slower O₂ consumption when stationary)

More on specific critical Angel Combs below.

    3. Oxygen, Hunger, and Thirst

Oxygen works the same: face upward when surfacing to ascend faster. There is a brief grace window (~2 seconds) after you run out before death, so don’t count on it.

The Oxygen Tunic plants in caves intermittently release O₂ bubbles that extend your dives. Learn where they are early.

Hunger and thirst are optional via difficulty settings, where you can’t change this once you start, so decide before you launch your first save.

If you leave them on, read the food section below carefully, as eating cooked fish before unlocking the Digestion Angel Comb will actively harm you.

Your First Two Hours in Subnautica 2: Step-by-Step

    Step 1: Craft These Immediately

survival tools crafting in subnautica 2

The Fabricator is unlocked in your escape pod from the start. Your three priority crafts:

Survival Multitool → 3x Titanium. Titanium is everywhere on the sandy seafloor near the Lifepod; look for gunmetal geometric clusters. Break them multiple times to yield 2–3 pieces.

Scanner → 2x Titanium, 2x Quartz, 1x Basic Battery. Quartz is translucent and jagged — find it on and inside large red spherical coral structures.

For the Basic Battery, you need 2x Copper (found in caves and under rocky arches, including a small cave directly beneath the Lifepod) and 1x Acidic Raion Pouch (pink plant in that same cave; use the Multitool to peel the three outer casings before collecting the inner Gel Sac, otherwise it explodes and poisons you).

Basic Fins → 2x Rubber, 2x Fibers. Rubber comes from Lucifer Rotsacs (bulbous orange plants in Cradle Shootroot nests, ~100m north of Lifepod). Fibers come from shredding Shootroots and Whip Gorgons with the Multitool.

Step 2: Fix Your Digestion (Critical)

This is the step that kills new players. You will catch fish, cook them, eat them, and take damage. That’s not a bug. Your Pioneer’s biology hasn’t adapted to alien fauna yet.

Subnautica creature interior showing digestion chamber with glowing pink tissue

The fix: find the Digestion Angel Comb approximately 150–160 meters north-northeast of your Lifepod. It has glowing wing-like appendages and a cluster of pink bulbs at the top. Interact with a bulb to unlock the Digestion Adaptation.

After that, cooked Halfmoons, Bluemoons, Harvestmoons, and Geordies are all safe to eat and grant +25–30 food.

If you’re not there yet, stick to Nutrient Blocks from the Lifepod’s locker and supply crates. They grant +40 food and are the only thing you can safely eat at the start.

    Step 3: Handle Thirst

Thirst actually depletes faster than hunger. The fix is easy: collect Water Slugs from the seafloor (they have a slight blue glow, easy to spot).

One Water Slug at the Fabricator = one Water Bottle = +40 Thirst. Always carry a few. Water Slugs cannot restore Thirst directly; they need to be processed first, so don’t get caught empty-handed on a long run.

Step 4: Unlock Skills at the Welcome Center

East of the Lifepod is the Welcome Center, a broken-down civilian structure with a Biolab inside. You can’t access it until you power the Battery Power Outlet in the adjacent room; bring a Basic Battery. The wire connects to the NOA unit in the center room.

Once powered, the Biolab lets you slot Active and Passive Biomods. Start with Seaskimmer (seafloor speed) and Oxygen Control (slow O₂ when hovering); both are immediately practical.

    Step 5: Expand Inventory

Wait for NOA to send you the “Chap” signal (~250 meters south-southeast). Find the Colonist Bunker in the rocky crags and interact with the Biobed inside.

This permanently unlocks additional inventory slots. Watch out for the Coral Crab and the aggressive Hammerhead in that area.

Subnautica 2’s Food and Water: Full Breakdown

Once you secure a reliable oxygen tank, dehydration and starvation become your immediate, most lethal threats on Proteus. We cannot stress this enough: your human digestive system is initially completely incompatible with this alien ecosystem.

how to get food and water in subnautica 2
Image Credit: YouTube / Quick Tips

Trying to force down a cooked local fish right out of the drop pod will literally damage your health. Until you mutate your DNA, survival depends entirely on scavenging emergency Alterra rations and processing localized, non-toxic water sources.

Managing your sustenance requires strict inventory discipline, especially when you are navigating a suffocating cave system hundreds of meters away from your closest fabricator. So yeah, these is exactly how we keep our vitals out of the red zone.

    Thirst Management

    • Water Slug → Water Bottle at the Fabricator: +40 Thirst, requires 1x Water Slug
    • Later, once you have a Processor, you can make Water from 3x Fibrous Pulp as an alternative.

    Hunger Management

    Before Digestion Adaptation:

    • Nutrient Blocks only (+40 food); found in supply crates and the Lifepod locker
    • Once you have a Processor: craft Biofuel Blocks from organic materials (Fibrous Pulp, Pent), then combine 1x Biofuel Block + 1x Salt at the Fabricator for 1x Nutrient Block.

    After Digestion Adaptation:

    • Cooked fish (Halfmoon, Geordie, Harvestmoon, Bluemoon): +25–30 food each
    • More advanced meals and salads unlock as you scan new fauna and flora
    • Hunt, cook, and eat freely.

Subnautica 2 Vehicle List: What’s Available in Early Access

The Subnautica 2 vehicle list in Early Access is smaller than veteran players might expect; there’s no Cyclops-equivalent yet, and that’s been noted in player feedback.

What’s here is solid, but the community wants more buildable large subs in future updates.

    The Tadpole (Primary Submersible)

The Tadpole is the Subnautica 2 Seamoth equivalent; your personal submersible with a glass cockpit, oxygen generation, and modular upgrade slots.

It has a default crush depth of 250 meters. Past that, hull integrity takes damage alongside the vehicle’s health. Always carry a Repair Tool.

Energy drains while driving. Recharge by parking at the Tadpole Dock or swapping its Power Cell (accessible at the top of the vehicle).

The Tadpole also has a hardpoint at the back for attaching a Portable Storage, which makes farming runs dramatically more efficient. In multiplayer, extra players can hang onto the latches on the sides while you pilot.

Successfully building a Tadpole marks the transition from early-game to mid-game. Once it’s operational, deeper biomes like the Axum Towers become accessible.

    The Hauler (Multiplayer Cargo Vehicle)

The Hauler is a larger vehicle designed for multiplayer crews focused on bulk resource transport, with a dedicated hauling platform for co-op resource runs.

Less maneuverable than the Tadpole but substantially more useful when you’re stocking up materials for a major base expansion.

How to Unlock the Tadpole: Full Fragment Guide

You need to scan at least 3 Tadpole Fragments to unlock the blueprint. There are 9 confirmed fragment locations. You don’t need all 9, just the three most accessible ones for your route.

Tadpole submarine vessel with white and blue design in Subnautica

    Tadpole Fragment Locations

Fragment #1 → 280 meters east-northeast of Lifepod. Near a cargo container with a Hydroelectric Turbine at the bottom of a current-fed canyon.

Fragment #2 → 380 meters east-northeast of Lifepod. Ride the same canyon current to the Cicada Wreck (Lander Garage), next to a scannable Bioreactor.

Fragment #3 → 420 meters north-northeast of Lifepod. On a plateau near a crashed Alterra ship. The Ruby blackbox recording is right next to it.

Fragment #4 → 480 meters north-northeast of Lifepod. From Fragment #3, check the rocky crags near the BFJs (Behemoth Finger-Legged Jellyfish; yes, the community named them).

Fragment #5 → 430 meters north-northwest of Lifepod. At the back of the Old Habitat, which you’ll visit naturally while following NOA Terminal missions.

Fragment #6 → 160 meters south-southwest of Lifepod. On a cliffside ridge near the Great Jaw organism (an excellent Lithium farming spot).

Fragment #7 → 300 meters south-southwest of Lifepod. Inside a Colonist Bunker that also contains a permanent character upgrade.

Fragment #8 → 515 meters east of Lifepod. Inside the Zezuran Desert biome; requires the Heat Tolerance Angel Comb Adaptation before entering. Don’t go here unprepared.

Fragment #9 → The Tadpole Pens location (main story progression). Only go here after you’ve already built the vehicle, it has additional fragments and structures to scan, but it’s a mid-game area.

Our recommendation: Hit Fragments #1, #2, and #3 in a single run following the canyon current east-northeast. It’s the cleanest route and keeps you in relatively safe depth.

    Building the Tadpole: Full Requirements

Once you have the blueprint, you need these fixtures inside your base:

    • Moonpool — 5x Titanium
    • Tadpole Dock — 2x Titanium Ingot, 1x Silver Ingot, 2x Copper Wire
    • Vehicle Fabricator — 2x Titanium Ingot, 1x Copper Ingot, 2x Glass
    • Tadpole Core Vehicle — 2x Titanium Ingot, 1x Glass, 1x System Chip, 1x Power Cell

Build a room, then build that same room within the same space to double its dimensions. You need the extra footprint for the Moonpool and its attached fixtures.

    Tadpole Upgrades and Modular Attachments

The Modification Station (requires 2x Titanium, 2x Celestine, 2x Copper) is where you craft upgrade modules. Structural attachments go through the Vehicle Fabricator.

Blueprints for upgrades come from scanning or collecting data cards in the world. Equip modules by clicking the slot at the top of the Tadpole, next to the Power Cell.

    Structural Attachments

    • Tadpole Scout Ray Chassis: Found inside the Tadpole Pens. Maximizes acceleration, top speed, and turn rate. Materials: 2x Plasteel Ingot, 1x Advanced Wiring Kit, 1x Dedicated Core, 1x Strong Acid.
    • Tadpole Haul Chassis: Increases carrying capacity. Materials: TBD (still being documented as players discover locations).

    Upgrade Modules

Engine Efficiency → Found in the Alien Base (next location after completing Tadpole Pens objectives). Reduces power consumption by 20% per module; stacks up to 4x for 80% total reduction. Materials: 1x Titanium Ingot, 2x Glass, 1x System Chip.

Depth Module Mark I → Check the NOA Terminal in the Alien Base for a bearing of 165 degrees south-southeast. Enter the cave at that location; a Needler Mango is guarding it, so have your sonic repulsor ready. Effect: increases crush depth to 450 meters (does not stack). Materials: 3x Celestine, 2x Enameled Glass, 1x System Chip.

Photovoltaic Charger → Found at the Cicada Wreck (EVA Prep) past the Alien Base; look for a NOA Terminal ping about the Iso blackbox recording. Effect: passively charges the Tadpole while in shallow water during daytime. Materials: 1x Copper Ingot, 1x Strong Acid, 1x Troilite.

Cavitation Muffler → Located at the Metal Farms area, 700 meters east-southeast of the Alien Base. A Leviathan patrols this zone; approach carefully. Effect: reduces noise output, making the Tadpole less likely to attract threats. Materials: 3x Titanium, 2x Strontium.

    Base Building: Survival Infrastructure

Submersible cockpit view showing deep ocean exploration in Subnautica 2

    1. Core Placement Logic

Build near your current active area, walking 500 meters back to your starter base after a deep scan run is how you lose 20 minutes per session. Every time you push into a new biome, establish a forward base.

    Every base should have:

    • A NoA Terminal for mission tracking and blackbox signals
    • A Biobed as a respawn/reprint point; death without a Biobed in range means a long swim
    • Portable Lockers for on-site inventory overflow.

    2. Hull Integrity

If your base hull integrity hits zero, you get cascading breaches. You must repair the structural issue before the individual leaks, or you’ll be patching forever.

Don’t build recklessly in high-current areas without reinforcing first.

    3. Power Planning

Solar panels are fine for shallow builds. As you go deeper or move into cave systems, look for currents to feed thermal or kinetic generators.

Plan your power source before you need it, not after your fabricator shuts off mid-craft.

    4. Co-op Base Building

With up to 4 players, material hauling and multi-segment builds become genuinely fast. Co-op is where the Hauler vehicle pays off; one player runs materials while others construct.

The most efficient early-game strategy in multiplayer is splitting duties: one player scans and explores, one hunts food and water resources, one builds, and one scouts ahead for threats.

Biomes: What’s Active in Early Access

Underwater biome in Subnautica 2 with rocky formations, kelp forests

Safe Shallows → Starting zone. Sandy, calm, good for Titanium and Copper basics. Ignore nothing here because every scan adds to your databank.

Kelp Forest (Reimagined) → Different flora than the original, but the biome role is similar. Rubber-making resources are concentrated here.

Overgrown Ruins → Ancient structures, story context, and significant lore clues. Performance warning: this area is demanding on lower-end GPUs in its current state. Expect framerate dips until patches improve it.

Zezuran Desert (Hot Biome) → Heat Tolerance Adaptation required before entering. To unlock it, find the Angel Comb shielded by Bloom Cankers. You need a Feedback Resonator (an upgrade from the Sonic Resonator) to break the shields. Do not enter this biome before getting the adaptation; your character will take continuous heat damage.

Deep Trenches → The home of the new Leviathans. Go here with a fully equipped Tadpole, the Depth Module Mark I, and the Dash Biomod. Going in without vehicle backup is how you get your inventory deleted.

Axum Towers → Accessible once the Tadpole is built. Mid-game biome with more complex threats and better resources.

    Exploration Tactics and Safety

There is no in-game map. Use the scanner to chart nearby areas, toggle beacons to mark Angel Combs you haven’t reached yet, and keep the compass (top of HUD) oriented at all times. F6 hides the UI for screenshots; just don’t forget where you are before pressing it.

Subnautica underwater exploration with bioluminescent coral and ROV equipment

Early exploration approach: Stay close to the surface when crossing deep open water. Larger creatures ignore you more readily near the top. As soon as you hear something that isn’t ambient ocean ambience, stop moving. Listen. Then make a decision.

Sonic repulsors and flares work on large threats. Flares distract big predators but do not affect smaller, faster ones. Don’t attack wildlife unprovoked; everything in this ocean will hold a grudge.

Abandoned habitats and outposts contain tools, mods, and restoration items. Prioritize scanning them even if you can’t use the contents yet; the blueprints matter more than the loot in the early hours.

    Inventory and Resource Management

Travel light on explore runs: a few water bottles, a few Nutrient Blocks, your scanner, and a spare battery. If you see a resource node, mark its location and come back with an empty inventory. Do not try to do both in one trip; you’ll waste time making hard calls about what to drop.

Portable Lockers are your single best QoL early investment. Craft them and plant them at every base. They’re the difference between a clean base organization and spending five minutes staring at overflowing stacks looking for that one Copper Ore you definitely brought back last time.

Manual saves before risks: big cave systems, first contact with a new biome, any time you’re taking the Tadpole into deep territory for the first time. Death only loses your current inventory (you can recover it from a death cache signal), but losing a Tadpole-load of materials is brutal.

    Death, Menus, and Multiplayer Specifics

When you die, your inventory is dropped at the death location as a recoverable cache; a signal marks it. The respawn biobed prints you back with nothing but your permanent unlocks and Adaptations intact. Make manual saves before entering high-risk zones.

One critical note: the inventory and PDA menus do not pause the game. You will get grabbed by something while reading a databank entry. Use the system/Esc menu to fully pause if you need to step away or plan.

In multiplayer, inventories sync when players are in proximity. Shared discovery means one scan benefits the whole team. Drop-in/drop-out means friends can join mid-session without disrupting save state. The host saves the world; if the host logs off, the session ends.

    Known Issues and EA Roadmap

    Current bugs (being patched):

    • Fish occasionally clip through base walls
    • Invisible boundary walls at current map edges
    • Framerate drops in the Overgrown Ruins/City area

Update 1.1 (upcoming): Sprint button, more Biomod slots, quality of life focus.

Update 1.2 (upcoming): Multiplayer features, including emotes and an improved ping system.

The full 1.0 release is estimated to be 2–3 years out. The devs are active on Discord and Steam forums and are explicitly asking for bug reports and feedback to shape updates.

This Subnautica 2 guide covers the Early Access state as of the May 14, 2026 launch, and the game is already delivering on what the series does best: making you feel like a fragile creature in a vast, indifferent ocean that is absolutely beautiful and absolutely trying to kill you.

The Tadpole is a worthy successor to the Seamoth, the Angel Comb system adds genuine mechanical depth to progression, and co-op changes the survival calculus in ways the original never could.

The ocean of Proteus is new territory. Go in prepared, keep a beacon on everything that matters, and don’t get cocky about your O₂ meter.

Updates will keep expanding the world based on what the community feeds back. Watch the roadmap. Report what you see. Dive deeper than you think is safe. That’s where all the fun stuff is.

    FAQs

When you hear a Leviathan's audio cue, stay calm and try to move away from the sound as quickly as possible. Use your submarine or swimming abilities to create distance, and avoid confrontation until you have better equipment and understanding of the creature's behavior.

After breaking the surface near the CICADA wreckage, immediately assess your oxygen levels and locate nearby resources. Prioritize finding or building a safe shelter and gathering basic materials for crafting tools and air tanks.

New players often venture too deep without adequate oxygen supplies, ignore warning signals from dangerous creatures, and fail to establish a base early for storage and respawning. Planning your expeditions and building defensive structures early will help you avoid these costly mistakes.
